MISSOURI SOLO PLAY FESTIVAL:
Three Great Performers Come to the Stage in Repertory
LIZ AND LADYBIRD: WHISTLESTOP 1964!
Written and performed by Sheila Gordon*
Directed by Rebecca Whitehurst
In October of 1964, the Deep South was fiercely set against re-electing President Lyndon Johnson, due to passage of the Civil Rights Act. The LBJ plan: send Lady Bird Johnson through 1692 miles of Southern towns to sell the War on Poverty and Civil Rights agendas. For the first time in U.S. history, a First Lady would take to the campaign trail unaccompanied by her husband. In an era when women were expected to speak only about subjects such as home and family, Lady Bird surprised voters throughout the nation with her eloquence on issues such as healthcare, economics, and education and shaped the future of women in politics. Told from the perspective of Press Secretary Liz Carpenter, seamlessly portrays various members of the ‘64 LBJ White House and the Lady Bird Whistle Stop Campaign Tour. World Premiere.

By Lee Blessing
Directed by Robert Bradley, Starring Noah Karrash
In this seriously funny romp, the provocative work of one edgy performance artist comes up against a conservative politician running for the senate. The senator has a lovable dog; a charming, folksy manner; and a campaign to cut “frivolous arts spending.” The artist has a plan for one final shocking performance with his NEA funding – kidnapping the dog and making it loyal to him. Lee Blessing explores the mysterious connections between dogs and their humans, politics and artists, and miraculous wonder in our lives. Springfield Area Premiere.
