About Springfield Contemporary Theatre

Springfield Contemporary Theatre boldly connects and engages our community with inclusive high-quality entertainment.
SCT is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to the high-quality production of well-written contemporary plays and musicals - or classic works that can be reimagined or re-energized through a modern point of view.

Productions at SCT are characterized by bold stories, voices and perspectives often not heard on stage, and themes and ideas that are timely to the Springfield community and the world around us. SCT’s programming includes cutting-edge new works and regional premieres, with some materials brought directly from the Broadway and Off-Broadway stage. Others include hit audience favorite musicals and revues, and even some productions making their world premiere right here in Springfield. One thing that remains consistent is that all of their productions, guided by a professional staff, involve outstanding local talent, including actors, musicians, directors, designers, and volunteers behind the scenes and in the box office. SCT is made by the community for the community.

Springfield Contemporary Theatre is a member of Springfield Regional Arts Council, It’s All Downtown, and the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce.

History

Since being founded in 1995 by Louis H. Schaeffer, SCT has performed in a variety of spaces, including the Hotel Vandivort, Wilhoit Plaza, the Springfield Art Museum, the backlot of Chestnut Corners on Chestnut Expressway, and even the studio of their office space, before finally landing at their current home at the Historic Fox Theatre. SCT’s residency at the Fox began in 2023 as a joint effort with the History Museum on the Square to preserve and revitalize the historic venue by drawing attention to it as a performance space.

SCT strives to be a place for creation and collaboration, a place to explore new ideas, to be challenged, and a place to grow as an individual and as a community. SCT welcomes participation on every level, without any previous theatre experience. For those who want to get involved, SCT has opportunities for virtually every skillset, including ushering for performances, working backstage, performing, building sets and costumes, and even designing.
