Roles:
All roles in this play are black or of African descent.
Troy Maxon (45-55 years old) a garbage collector who prides himself on his ability to provide for his family and keep it together. He is the patriarch and central character. He continually places barriers between himself and the very people he loves the most.
Rose (40-45) Troy’s second wife and the mother of Cory. Maternal, practical, patient, and forgiving. Powerful underneath and determined to hold her family together. She asks Troy to build a fence around their house.
Jim Bono (40-65 yrs old) Troy's best friend for over thirty years. The two met while serving a stretch in prison. Bono, as he is called, works alongside Troy hauling garbage for the sanitation department. Bono admires Troy and sees him as a role model. Bono warns Troy to end the extramarital affair he's having or risk losing Rose and their friendship.
Gabriel (45-55 yrs old) Troy's brother. Gabriel fought as a soldier in World War II and was severely wounded and brain damaged. His injuries have left him with a metal plate in his head. He receives a check from the government Troy used that check in part to purchase his own home. Gabriel imagines himself as the archangel Gabriel roaming through the neighborhood chasing hell hounds.
Lyons (25-35 yrs old) Troy's son from a previous relationship. Lyons is an aspiring Jazz musician who has no regular job. He admits that music is the only thing which gives him purpose and enables him to control his anger. Lyons grew up without his father's presence, as Troy was serving time in prison. He frequently borrows money from Troy and vows to pay him back.
Cory (18-21 yrs old) Troy and Rose's teenage son. Cory is a high school senior and a talented athlete. When a college football recruiter shows an interest in Cory, Troy refuses to see him. He also won't allow his son to play football any longer. Cory is intimated by his father and wonders
if Troy even likes him.
Raynell (7-10 yrs old, female presenting) Troy's illegitimate daughter. Raynell is taken in and raised by Rose after her mother dies in childbirth. Raynell has heard stories about Cory, and meets him on the day of Troy's funeral. The pair sing a song together which Troy has sung throughout his life. Actress does not have to be an amazing singer, but should be able to sing sweetly.

Leo Frank (late 20’s-30’s, Bari-tenor, Gb2-F4) Our story's tragic protagonist accused of murder. As National Pencil Factory Superintendent, Leo is neurotic and a serial pessimist. Though married to Lucille, he is physically and emotionally displaced. A White Jew from Brooklyn.
Lucille Frank (late 20’s-30’s, Mezzo w/ Belt, G3-E5) Gentle and mousy, but resourceful and resilient. Despite her husband's feelings, she is a true Southerner through and through but can see through the deception. A White Jew from Georgia.
Judge Roan (60’s-70’s, Baritone, B2-D4) Serves as the Judge on the infamous trial. Motivated by bigotry and racism, he is dangerously committed to the ideals of the Confederacy. White Georgian. Actor also plays Old Solider.
Hugh Dorsey (30’s-40’s, Baritone, B2-F4) Atlanta's District Attorney. He is a devout Christian, who is brute and manipulative at times. Hungry for political success and recognition. White Georgian.
Gov. John Slaton (30’s-40’s, Bari-tenor, Bb2-F4) As the Governor of Georgia, he is highly concerned with public perception. Flirtatious and fun at times. Strives to maintain his values. White Southerner.
Frankie Epps (able to play 14-17, Tenor, Bb2-Bb4) A charming and simple young man, he is Mary's devoted friend. Playful and flirtatious. White Georgian. Actor also plays Young Solider.
Mary Phagan (able to play 13 yrs old, Mezzo, Eb4-D5) A factory worker at the National Pencil Factory who is murdered. She is very innocent but has moments of sassiness and playfulness. White Georgian.
Minnie (30’s-60’s, Mezzo w/ Belt) A servant for the Frank family. Sassy and a “busy body.” Her testimony helps put also Frank away. Black Georgian.
Jim Conley (20’s-30’s, Tenor, D3-Bb4) A cleaning supervisor at National Pencil Factory. Secretly, he is a convict on the run. Pompous showman with a strong build. Actor also plays Riley, a servant for the Slaton family. Black Georgian.
Newt Lee (50’s-60’s, Bass, Bb2-Db4) He is the night watchman at National Pencil Factory. A bit too old to possess the job. Physically intimidating, but a gentle giant. Black Georgian.
Britt Craig (20’s-30’s, Tenor, Eb3-G4) A washed up reporter who can often be found three sheets to the wind. Weaselly and desperate for his 'big break.' White Georgian.
Tom Watson (30’s-40’s, Baritone/Bass) Conservative politician and publisher, who helps to spur on the conviction of Leo Frank. Actor also plays Detective Starnes, lead investigator for the Mary Phagan case. White Georgian.
Mrs. Phagan (30’s-40’s, Alto) Mother to Mary Phagan. Actor also plays Sally Slaton, wife to Gov. John Slaton.White Georgian.
Angela (20’s-40’s, Mezzo w/ Belt) A servant for the Slaton family. Sassy and a “busy body.” Her testimony helps put also Frank away. Black Georgian.
Officer Ivey (20’s-40’s) Investigating officer on the Mary Phagan case. Actor also play Luther Rosser, Leo Frank’s defense attorney, comes off as a blithering idiot. White Georgian.
Iola Stover (13-17, Soprano) Friend of Mary and Frankie, who testifies against Leo Frank. White Georgian.
